The trip to Italy

The Académie de France in Rome was founded in 1666 and with it the beginning of the custom of a pilgrimage to discover the ancient heritage. Italy will become for the artists of the 19th century, a privileged destination in the footsteps of the Renaissance painters, an indispensable journey, an essential step in the formation of aesthetics. In the French public collections there are still many traces, drawings, engravings and paintings from these trips to Italy. from 27 June 2020 to 09 January 2021.
